When Emma Bennett became Headteacher of William Lovell CofE Academy, she took on the leadership of a school with a complex history and a clear need for renewed ambition. A leader shaped by resilience, ambition and service
Emma is a dynamic and ambitious leader with a deep belief that education is about developing the whole person. While academic success is essential for opening doors, she believes the true measure of a school is the kind of young people it sends into the world: compassionate, responsible individuals who care for others and understand their role in shaping the future.
Before moving into school leadership, Emma spent a decade competing and officiating at the highest levels of international hockey. As an international hockey umpire, she has represented her country on some of the world’s biggest sporting stages, including the Commonwealth Games, Champions Trophy and Olympic Qualification events.
Those experiences have shaped the values she brings to leadership every day: discipline, fairness, teamwork and a commitment to excellence. She understands that success comes from high expectations, hard work and the courage to keep improving.
Outside education and sport, Emma volunteers in search and rescue missions with her dogs – a role that requires resilience, calm decision-making and a deep respect for teamwork and the environment. Across every aspect of her life, she demonstrates the same principles she wants to instil in her students: perseverance, responsibility and a determination to help others flourish.
Working together to deliver lasting improvement
William Lovell’s journey has not been without challenges, but with strong leadership and the backing of LAAT, the school is entering an exciting new era. Emma’s determination, combined with the expertise and resources of the Trust, is helping to create the foundations for sustainable improvement.
Together, the school and Trust have invested in strengthening teaching and learning, recruiting subject specialists and ensuring students benefit from expert teaching across the curriculum. Significant investment has also been made in the school environment, including new science laboratories, improved facilities, a new car park, and two new student social areas – spaces designed by the students themselves (with support from the Trust’s Estates team).
This partnership approach reflects a shared commitment: that every student at William Lovell should have access to an excellent education and an environment where they feel valued, supported and inspired.

A key part of Emma’s vision is ensuring that opportunity is not limited by background or circumstance. The introduction of student scholarships, offering up to £500 to support individual talents and ambitions, is helping students pursue passions beyond the classroom. Whether funding specialist equipment, educational courses, competitions or personal development opportunities, these scholarships demonstrate the school’s belief that every student’s potential should be nurtured.
Student voice has also been placed at the heart of the school’s culture through the creation of a Student Leadership Team. Young people are not simply asked for their opinions; they are actively involved in shaping the future of their school, leading initiatives, supporting others and contributing to the community they are part of.
Opening doors beyond the classroom
Emma and her team are also passionate about ensuring students experience opportunities that broaden their horizons and build confidence. Recently, seven students travelled to Italy on an educational visit funded through the Government’s Turing Scheme. By successfully securing funding, the academy ensured that cost was not a barrier, prioritising students who may not otherwise have had the chance to take part.
For some students, it was their first experience of international travel – a life-changing opportunity that developed independence, confidence and curiosity about the wider world.
