Jackie’s marathon journey for every child

At 62, our CEO, Jackie Waters-Dewhurst, is lacing up her trainers and taking on the incredible challenge of running her first-ever marathon to raise vital funds for the Love As Action – Together Fund. This fund, created by LAAT, supports children across our schools by removing barriers to learning caused by financial hardship. From helping with essentials to ensuring every child can confidently access the full life of school, the fund is already making a big difference. Jackie’s marathon effort is not just about the miles, it’s about showing love in action and ensuring every child has the chance to thrive.

What makes this challenge even more remarkable is that Jackie is no seasoned runner. In her own words, she “never even ran as a child, hated PE, and only took up running briefly 10 years ago before quickly giving it up.” Taking on a marathon is therefore no small task. Jackie will be completing the race using the Jeffing method – a structured run/walk approach that makes endurance distances achievable.

The Honolulu Marathon is one of the few in the world without a cut-off time, meaning everyone is welcome to participate and finish in their own time. This ethos of equity and inclusion aligns perfectly with LAAT’s core values, and of course, the views from the volcano along the course aren’t bad either!

Importantly, none of the sponsorship money will go towards the trip itself – every penny raised will directly support the Love As Action – Together Fund and the children it helps.
